From the air to the sea – One IONICON PTR-MS masters both challenges

Originally constructed for and installed on a French SAFIRE research aircraft, a ruggedized and specially modified IONICON High-Sensitivity PTR-MS is now on a mission in the Atlantic Ocean. A team of French & German scientists* took the PTR-MS to the sea for the TRANSSIZ campaign aboard the icebreaker R/V Polarstern.

The scientists’ job is to detect trace gases dissolved in water with the help of the PTR-MS and a custom built “On Line Water Extractor Device” (OLWIED).

Fracking yields high wintertime ozone pollution

New study published in nature – ozone precursor in Utah oil and gas fields measured by PTR-MS

Chemicals released into the air by oil and gas exploration, extraction and related activities (i.e. horizontal drilling combined with hydraulic fracturing “fracking”) can spark reactions that lead to high levels of ozone in wintertime, high enough to exceed the US federal health standards, according to new NOAA-led research, published in Nature.

Winter ozone pollution is surprising because normally, the more intense sunlight of the summer season can spark the chemical reactions that create ozone pollution, said lead author Peter Edwards, a CIRES scientist working at CSD at the time of the study, now with University of York in England. However, Edwards and his colleagues showed that in winter in northeastern Utah, levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) build high enough that they can trigger pollution-forming reactions themselves.

Indian PTR-MS collects first VOC data from Indo-Gangetic Plain

Prof. Sinha and his team have compiled a comprehensive dataset from their new high quality atmospheric chemistry observation station at IISER Mohali.

Home of one seventh of the world’s population and as a fertile region, it sustains agricultural food crop production for much of South Asia, yet it remains one of the most under-studied regions of the world in terms of atmospheric composition and chemistry. One of Prof. Sinha’s goals is to change that and being our first Indian PTR-MS customer, he has a powerful tool at hand that he operates on a 24/7 basis together with his team in the new atmospheric chemistry facility “the blue eye in the sky” at IISER, Mohali.

IONICON PTR-MS system monitors GMP biotech processes

fermenter_copyright_boehringer_ingelheimIONICON is a partner in the Austrian Center for Industrial Biotechnology (ACIB) for the development of novel tools for real-time process monitoring of biotechnological fermentations. After the successful implementation in a laboratory environment, the IONICON PTR-technology could now make another important step and has been utilized for real-time process monitoring in an industrial, GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) controlled fermentation process. The ability to monitor volatile microbial metabolites in the off-gas, without an adaptation to the existing process, has enabled the introduction of PTR-MS to this highly regulated area.

PTR-MS for indoor air quality monitoring

A new review article discusses important applications of IONICON PTR-MS systems in indoor air quality monitoring.

Many sources of airborne contamination e.g. VOCs (volatile organic compounds) influence on the quality of indoor air. These substances are emitted by household products, electronics such as computers, printers or TVs,  construction materials, wall-paints, carpets, and furniture.  Many of which are known to affect human health or at least to cause unpleasant odors. They can be present in high concentrations due to insufficient ventilation inside closed spaces such as e.g. buildings, offices etc. but also cars and aircraft cabins. Chemical contamination of indoor air is a contributing factor to the so called “Sick Building Syndrome“.

IONICON PTR-MS is an excellent tool for assessing the concentration of indoor air VOCs, providing real-time quantitative results from very low levels (sub-pptv) to high concentrations (ppmv and above).

A new article by S. Schripp et al. discusses various scenarios, sources of contamination and their impact on the indoor air quality. The team of Fraunhofer WKI, Braunschweig, Germany, and IONICON described five applications of PTR-MS in Indoor Air:
