Ultra-Fast Time Response Even for IVOCs & SVOCs

Real-Time Ultra-Sensitive trace VOC analyzers from IONICON are known for their response times in fractions of a second and hence are often used to follow rapidly changing processes and VOC signals. However, some substances are known to show a slower instrumental response because of unwanted surface interactions. These substances are either highly polar or have a reduced volatility and are typically classified as „sticky“ compounds.

With IONICON’s new Extended Volatility Range (EVR) setup we minimize unwanted surface interactions and still preserve all the advantages of our fully pressure controlled inlet system. This extends our sub-second response from VOCs to a wide range of compounds in the intermediate-volatility range (IVOCs, e.g. 2-tridecanone and vanillin) and even reduces the response of semi-volatile species (SVOC) like cis-pinonic acid to single-digit seconds. CHARON Real-Time Aerosol Inlet System for PTR-TOFMS

Direct Sampling and Analysis of Atmospheric Particulate Organic Matter

An international team of researchers from the University of Innsbruck (Austria), the IRCELYON in Lyon (France) and the University of Oslo (Norway) recently studied the application of the new CHARON Particle Inlet to directly sample and analyze the chemical composition of atmospheric sub-µm particulate organic matter (POM) by PTR-TOFMS.

By conducting laboratory based measurements of pure aerosolized substances the team could demonstrate the quantitative response of CHARON PTR-TOFMS to a range of typical POM substances down to single-digit ng m-3 mass concentrations. This quantitative response combined with the low selectivity of PTR-MS led to a good agreement in the detection of total urban POM in comparison with other state-of-the-art aerosol instrumentation.  (more…)

Real-time PTR-MS meets autosampler – high throughput VOC analysis

The real-time capability of a PTR-MS gas analyzer is typically utilized to continuously monitor trace VOC concentrations – but not only. Some users appreciate the enormous speed of a PTR-MS to rapidly analyze discrete samples in seconds, where a manual sample provision can be the bottleneck.

This has become greatly facilitated with the new IONICON autosampler for PTR-MS. Analyzing hundreds of sample vials in an automated manner not only provides high data quality but also enables an ultra-high throughput, drastically reducing processing cost for larger batches of samples.

Our real-time VOC analyzers are known for their exceptional sensitivity. A higher sensitivity not only improves the limit of detection but also allows for a higher measurement frequency at a given signal-to-noise ratio. For real-time VOC analyzers this can have a beneficial implication when investigating highly dynamic processes such as e.g. flux measurements.
