PTR-TOF 1000 ULTRA – 2020 Performance Boost and new X2 Option

The “ULTRA” and “X2” effects push instrument sensitivity beyond 20,000

2020 starts with a considerable performance upgrade of the PTR-TOF 1000 ultra. New and improved hardware components increase the instrument’s sensitivity dramatically. Moreover, the PTR-TOF 1000 series now also features a higher mass resolution of > 2,000.

The PTR-TOF 1000 ultra was initially launched in 2016 and with its ION-BOOSTER funnel a considerably more performing instrument than the entry-level PTR-TOF 1000. Now our engineers have revised the ION-BOOSTER and new PTR-TOF 1000 ultra instruments come with 3x higher sensitivity of around 1,500-3,000 cps/ppbv as the new standard configuration. Founded by the inventors of Proton-Transfer-Reaction – Mass Spectrometry more than 20 years ago, IONICON has always been renowned for absolutely precise control of the ion chemistry during chemical ionization.

ION-BOOSTER funnel and hexapole ION-GUIDE with TRU-E/N

For IONICON this fact is still true even after the introduction of Radio Frequency (RF) components for focusing and transferring the ions from the reaction region into the mass analyzer.

Several manufacturers of CIMS instruments are trying to boost the sensitivities to the high spheres in which IONICON’s PTR-MS instruments perform. However, this comes at an extremely high cost: control over the ion-chemistry is lost. Undefined fragmentation of analytes renders a comparison of results with values published in the ample PTR-MS literature and, most importantly, accurate quantification impossible. As the reduced electric field strength (E/N) in the reaction region cannot be calculated any more as soon as RF devices are implemented, no E/N values can be stated upon publishing of measurements*, which seriously limits the reproducibility of results. Food-grade CO2 analysis: new PTR-TOF 1000 ultra application

Real-time Quantification of Impurities in Food-Grade CO2 with PTR-MS

The modern food and beverage industry is not imaginable without food-grade carbon (CO2) dioxide. Its many uses include carbonation of beverages, and as packaging and cooling gas.

In this study we investigate volatile organic impurities emerging from a food-grade certified (European standard E 290) carbon dioxide cylinder using a PTR-TOF 1000 ultra.

The PTR-TOF 1000 ultra is a compact PTR-TOFMS equipped with the ION-BOOSTER funnel technology. Its high sensitivity make the PTR-TOF 1000 ultra a perfect tool for applications where complex matrices have to be rapidly analyzed. One such example application is quality assurance in the food and flavor industry.

Up to 10x increased sensitivity with the new ION-BOOSTER technology.

Our real-time VOC analyzers are known for their exceptional sensitivity. A higher sensitivity not only improves the limit of detection but also allows for a higher measurement frequency at a given signal-to-noise ratio. For real-time VOC analyzers this can have a beneficial implication when investigating highly dynamic processes such as e.g. flux measurements.
