Breath Summit 2019 Review and Crowd Breath Analysis Experiment

IONICON PTR-TOFMS illustrates indoor air chemistry and crowd breath

In September the International Association for Breath Research (IABR)’s Breath Summit 2019 took place in Leicestershire, UK. IONICON participated as an exhibitor and with scientific contributions, also conducting a crowd breath experiment. Numerous excellent talks covered the whole spectrum of breath analysis could be enjoyed by the attendees.

Several presented PTR-TOF as their main tool for research, such as VOC analysis – a trailblazer in translational research, by Wolfram Miekisch, Beyond PTR – Additional ionization modes in PTR-TOFMS and their use in breath gas analysis, by Jens Herbig and Real‐time breath analysis during exhaustive exercise on a cycle ergometer, by Giovanni Pugliese.

IONICON PTR-TOF were not only presented on slides but also live at the IONICON booth. On a PTR-TOF 6000X2 with a BET breath sampling inlet participants could test their breath and experience the vast amount of data real-time breath analysis can reveal from a single exhalation with high resolution and sensitivity.

PTR-TOF in the spotlight at IABR Breath Summit 2016

IONICON’s PTR-TOFMS technology has become the leading method for real-time breath gas analysis.

The International Association for Breath Research (IABR) held its annual summit conference at the renowned ETH Zürich in Switzerland. Between September 14 – 16, 2016, the latest scientific results in breath research were presented. In 12 talks researchers featured PTR-MS as their tool of choice for real-time breath gas analysis.

The popularity of PTR-MS, and especially PTR-TOF, reflects the various advantages these instruments offer for breath gas research. The Time-of-Flight (TOF) system analyses the complete ionized spectrum in a fraction of a second with a resolution sufficient to resolve isobaric compounds. The high sensitivity allows the detection of ppt-concentrations from a single exhalation. (more…)

PTR-MS breath test shows potential for detecting liver disease

Researchers at the University of Birmingham have published results that suggest a non-invasive breath test for liver disease using an IONICON PTR-MS. Elevated levels of limonene in patients have been found to be indicative of a diseased liver.

Especially in the UK liver disease has risen sharply over the past few decades and is the third biggest cause of premature mortality. Patients do not often present with symptoms until the disease is advanced. Even then diagnosis is difficult and the symptoms are often general and can be mistaken for other pathologies.

Breath gas analysis is a non-invasive method to collect information on the state of an individual by monitoring the concentration of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in the exhaled breath, which are directly correlate to their concentrations in blood.

Breath Analysis with PTR-MS has been certified for clinical use

IONICON launches the BET-med, a PTR-MS inlet system for real-time breath analysis approved for clinical use.

Breath gas analysis is a fast growing field of research with many potential applications that are being or are still waiting to be explored. Most instruments analyze samples offline, where samples collected into bags or onto traps can suffer from partial degradation of breath metabolites or manifestation of artifacts. IONICON PTR-MS instruments offer the possibility to analyze breath directly and in real-time with many advantages: A whole breath cycle can be monitored and both the end-tidal breath and the room-air concentrations can be extracted. IONICON developed a special sampling inlet for breath analysis that is based on Buffered-End-Tidal (BET) Sampling, which extends the time for the analysis of the end-tidal breath fraction and allows for LODs in the low pptv range from a single exhalation (see Winkler et al. 2013).  This device has now been approved for clinical use.

Live demonstrations at Pittcon 2013 – a huge interest in IONICON PTR-MS

Visitors were curious to test their breath in real-time and get some insight on the air they inhale at the show floor

Pittcon 2013 took place in Philadelphia for the very first time and attracted  more than 18,000 attendees, 1,011 exhibiting companies from 28 countries and of course also us. We at IONICON showcased our most recent products such as the Liquid Calibration Unit (LCU), the IONIMED BET-med breath sampling inlet, and a full range of  Trace Gas Analyzers based on PTR-MS and SRI-MS technology.

We feel that a live demonstration of our PTR-MS instruments is the best way to show their outstanding capabilities. Many visitors were attracted by the chance of doing real-time breath analysis and experienced the benefits of a quantitative and fast response, having a PTR-QMS 300 instrument connected to a special BET-med breath sampling inlet.
