New Analytical Chemistry Paper on CHARON PTR-TOFMS Performance

Bulk Organic Aerosol Analysis by PTR-MS with High Precision & Accuracy

IONICON All-in-One Analyzer: the CHARON PTR-TOF 6000 X2

Very recently, we have published a technical note in Analytical Chemistry introducing an improved methodology for the determination of organic aerosol properties with CHARON PTR-TOFMS. By analysis of a large set of pure compounds we were able to derive an algorithm to correct for ionic fragmentation. Therefore CHARON is now able to measure the bulk aerosol mass concentration, bulk average elemental ratios (e.g. H:C, O:C) and even bulk average molecular formulas in unprecedented precision and accuracy.

Taking CHARON PTR-TOF to the Sky

At the Frontier of Airborne Research aboard NASA’s Flying Laboratory

Using the opportunity provided by NASA’s Student Airborne Research Program (SARP) we gave wings to our newly developed CHARON aerosol inlet. In cooperation with the University of Oslo our team combined CHARON and a custom built PTR-TOF 4000 instrument.

“Business Class” for our airworthy CHARON PTR-TOF 4000, monitoring VOCs & aerosol in real-time.

Airworthiness requires withstanding of heavy G-forces, coping with pressure changes and most importantly being fail safe. Therefore unique modifications to CHARON have been made and thoroughly tested before getting airborne. (more…)

CHARON Real-Time Aerosol Inlet System for PTR-TOFMS

Direct Sampling and Analysis of Atmospheric Particulate Organic Matter

An international team of researchers from the University of Innsbruck (Austria), the IRCELYON in Lyon (France) and the University of Oslo (Norway) recently studied the application of the new CHARON Particle Inlet to directly sample and analyze the chemical composition of atmospheric sub-µm particulate organic matter (POM) by PTR-TOFMS.

CHARON PTR-TOF 6000 X2 with two inlets in parallel for real-time VOC and particle analysis

By conducting laboratory based measurements of pure aerosolized substances the team could demonstrate the quantitative response of CHARON PTR-TOFMS to a range of typical POM substances down to single-digit ng m-3 mass concentrations. This quantitative response combined with the low selectivity of PTR-MS led to a good agreement in the detection of total urban POM in comparison with other state-of-the-art aerosol instrumentation.  (more…)
