The New Exclusive SRI-MS Reagent Ion: NH4+ and Its Benefits

A novel proprietary method of NH4+ production for IONICON customers

In PTR-TOF-MS traditionally H3O+ reagent ions produced from H2O vapor are used. NH4+ reagent ions have been mentioned in literature as being particularly beneficial because of higher sensitivity (less fragmentation) and higher selectivity (higher proton affinity). However, so far toxic and corrosive ammonia was needed for NH4+ production.

We developed a novel method of producing NH4+ solely from H2O vapor and N2 (gas cylinder or filtered air) in the established hollow cathode ion source, without the need of any ammonia, by adjusting the pressure and electric fields in the source (PCT application submitted). That is, the reagent ions can be rapidly switched. (more…)

Free download of Contributions to the 8th PTR-MS Conference 2019

All abstracts from the 8th International PTR-MS Conference are now online

In February 2019, the must-attend event for all PTR-MS users took place, attracting more than 100 participants from 18 nations. There’s a short review if you would like to know more.

Have you ever wondered what this huge number of IONICON instrument users achieves with their instrument, what they investigate, which complex processes they capture or industrial VOC monitoring challenge their solve with our instruments?

New IONICON Extended Volatility Range (EVR) PTR-MS

Ultra-Fast Time Response Even for IVOCs & SVOCs

Real-Time Ultra-Sensitive trace VOC analyzers from IONICON are known for their response times in fractions of a second and hence are often used to follow rapidly changing processes and VOC signals. However, some substances are known to show a slower instrumental response because of unwanted surface interactions. These substances are either highly polar or have a reduced volatility and are typically classified as „sticky“ compounds.

IONICON’s new EVR PTR-MS: ultra-fast response times for IVOCs & SVOCs

With IONICON’s new Extended Volatility Range (EVR) setup we minimize unwanted surface interactions and still preserve all the advantages of our fully pressure controlled inlet system. This extends our sub-second response from VOCs to a wide range of compounds in the intermediate-volatility range (IVOCs, e.g. 2-tridecanone and vanillin) and even reduces the response of semi-volatile species (SVOC) like cis-pinonic acid to single-digit seconds. New PTR-TOF 6000 X2 2019 Edition: More Performance – Reliable Results

Up to 3x increased sensitivity, a better LoD and 10% higher resolution

The IONICON PTR-TOF success story continues also in 2019 and starts with a performance upgrade for our PTR-TOF series. Continuous investments in R&D lead to a series of improvements of our hexapole Ion-Guide technology as well as the implementation of new RF-electronics catering to the high-performance ion-funnel and ion-guide set-up which we use at the PTR-TOF 6000 X2 (more…)

ioni APi-TOF Wins 2018 Innovation Award

APi-TOF Reinvented – IONICON APi-TOF Receives 2018 “TASIA”

After CHARON scored an innovation award from the “The Analytical Scientist” in 2017, we couldn’t believe our eyes when the game-changing IONICON APi-TOF was awarded a “TASIA” in 2018.

Each year The Analytical Scientist Innovation Awards (TASIAs) showcase those technologies driving the advancement of measurement science. We’re proud to be part of the top 15 “strokes of genius” that receive the magazine’s prestigious recognition. (more…)

PTR-MS now with Patented Ion-Chemistry Quality and TRU-E/N

The proprietary TRU-E/N™ method for utmost quantification accuracy

Founded by the inventors of Proton-Transfer-Reaction – Mass Spectrometry more than 20 years ago, IONICON has always been renowned for absolutely precise control of the ion chemistry during chemical ionization.

ION-BOOSTER funnel and hexapole ION-GUIDE with TRU-E/N

For IONICON this fact is still true even after the introduction of Radio Frequency (RF) components for focusing and transferring the ions from the reaction region into the mass analyzer.

Several manufacturers of CIMS instruments are trying to boost the sensitivities to the high spheres in which IONICON’s PTR-MS instruments perform. However, this comes at an extremely high cost: control over the ion-chemistry is lost. Undefined fragmentation of analytes renders a comparison of results with values published in the ample PTR-MS literature and, most importantly, accurate quantification impossible. As the reduced electric field strength (E/N) in the reaction region cannot be calculated any more as soon as RF devices are implemented, no E/N values can be stated upon publishing of measurements*, which seriously limits the reproducibility of results. Taking CHARON PTR-TOF to the Sky

At the Frontier of Airborne Research aboard NASA’s Flying Laboratory

Using the opportunity provided by NASA’s Student Airborne Research Program (SARP) we gave wings to our newly developed CHARON aerosol inlet. In cooperation with the University of Oslo our team combined CHARON and a custom built PTR-TOF 4000 instrument.

“Business Class” for our airworthy CHARON PTR-TOF 4000, monitoring VOCs & aerosol in real-time.

Airworthiness requires withstanding of heavy G-forces, coping with pressure changes and most importantly being fail safe. Therefore unique modifications to CHARON have been made and thoroughly tested before getting airborne. (more…)
