Breath Summit 2019 Review and Crowd Breath Analysis Experiment

IONICON PTR-TOFMS illustrates indoor air chemistry and crowd breath

In September the International Association for Breath Research (IABR)’s Breath Summit 2019 took place in Leicestershire, UK. IONICON participated as an exhibitor and with scientific contributions, also conducting a crowd breath experiment. Numerous excellent talks covered the whole spectrum of breath analysis could be enjoyed by the attendees.

PTR-TOF 6000 X2 with dedicated BET breath sampling inlet system

Several presented PTR-TOF as their main tool for research, such as VOC analysis – a trailblazer in translational research, by Wolfram Miekisch, Beyond PTR – Additional ionization modes in PTR-TOFMS and their use in breath gas analysis, by Jens Herbig and Real‐time breath analysis during exhaustive exercise on a cycle ergometer, by Giovanni Pugliese.

IONICON PTR-TOF were not only presented on slides but also live at the IONICON booth. On a PTR-TOF 6000X2 with a BET breath sampling inlet participants could test their breath and experience the vast amount of data real-time breath analysis can reveal from a single exhalation with high resolution and sensitivity.

New Analytical Chemistry Paper on CHARON PTR-TOFMS Performance

Bulk Organic Aerosol Analysis by PTR-MS with High Precision & Accuracy

IONICON All-in-One Analyzer: the CHARON PTR-TOF 6000 X2

Very recently, we have published a technical note in Analytical Chemistry introducing an improved methodology for the determination of organic aerosol properties with CHARON PTR-TOFMS. By analysis of a large set of pure compounds we were able to derive an algorithm to correct for ionic fragmentation. Therefore CHARON is now able to measure the bulk aerosol mass concentration, bulk average elemental ratios (e.g. H:C, O:C) and even bulk average molecular formulas in unprecedented precision and accuracy.

The New Exclusive SRI-MS Reagent Ion: NH4+ and Its Benefits

A novel proprietary method of NH4+ production for IONICON customers

In PTR-TOF-MS traditionally H3O+ reagent ions produced from H2O vapor are used. NH4+ reagent ions have been mentioned in literature as being particularly beneficial because of higher sensitivity (less fragmentation) and higher selectivity (higher proton affinity). However, so far toxic and corrosive ammonia was needed for NH4+ production.

We developed a novel method of producing NH4+ solely from H2O vapor and N2 (gas cylinder or filtered air) in the established hollow cathode ion source, without the need of any ammonia, by adjusting the pressure and electric fields in the source (PCT application submitted). That is, the reagent ions can be rapidly switched. (more…)

New IONICON Extended Volatility Range (EVR) PTR-MS

Ultra-Fast Time Response Even for IVOCs & SVOCs

Real-Time Ultra-Sensitive trace VOC analyzers from IONICON are known for their response times in fractions of a second and hence are often used to follow rapidly changing processes and VOC signals. However, some substances are known to show a slower instrumental response because of unwanted surface interactions. These substances are either highly polar or have a reduced volatility and are typically classified as „sticky“ compounds.

IONICON’s new EVR PTR-MS: ultra-fast response times for IVOCs & SVOCs

With IONICON’s new Extended Volatility Range (EVR) setup we minimize unwanted surface interactions and still preserve all the advantages of our fully pressure controlled inlet system. This extends our sub-second response from VOCs to a wide range of compounds in the intermediate-volatility range (IVOCs, e.g. 2-tridecanone and vanillin) and even reduces the response of semi-volatile species (SVOC) like cis-pinonic acid to single-digit seconds.
