PTR-MS now with Patented Ion-Chemistry Quality and TRU-E/N

Founded by the inventors of Proton-Transfer-Reaction – Mass Spectrometry more than 20 years ago, IONICON has always been renowned for absolutely precise control of the ion chemistry during chemical ionization.

For IONICON this fact is still true even after the introduction of Radio Frequency (RF) components for focusing and transferring the ions from the reaction region into the mass analyzer.

Several manufacturers of CIMS instruments are trying to boost the sensitivities to the high spheres in which IONICON’s PTR-MS instruments perform. However, this comes at an extremely high cost: control over the ion-chemistry is lost. Undefined fragmentation of analytes renders a comparison of results with values published in the ample PTR-MS literature and, most importantly, accurate quantification impossible. As the reduced electric field strength (E/N) in the reaction region cannot be calculated any more as soon as RF devices are implemented, no E/N values can be stated upon publishing of measurements*, which seriously limits the reproducibility of results. Taking CHARON PTR-TOF to the Sky

At the Frontier of Airborne Research aboard NASA’s Flying Laboratory

Using the opportunity provided by NASA’s Student Airborne Research Program (SARP) we gave wings to our newly developed CHARON aerosol inlet. In cooperation with the University of Oslo our team combined CHARON and a custom built PTR-TOF 4000 instrument.

“Business Class” for our airworthy CHARON PTR-TOF 4000, monitoring VOCs & aerosol in real-time.

Airworthiness requires withstanding of heavy G-forces, coping with pressure changes and most importantly being fail safe. Therefore unique modifications to CHARON have been made and thoroughly tested before getting airborne. (more…)

The ioniTOF is our modular and flexible, entry-level to high-resolution Time-of-Flight platform, featuring custom interfaces and high-performance IONICON hexapole ION-GUIDEs. All our renowned PTR-TOFMS series products are exclusively based on the ioniTOF. Now we took this concept one step further and developed an Atmospheric Pressure Interface for the ioniTOF.

Our engineering team is eager to work out special solutions and by now we have a solid track record for more than two dozen tailor-made analytical instruments that are fully customized.

Each one is unique and purpose-built to withstand G-forces, shocks, varying pressure levels and temperatures that you and I wouldn’t like to experience. Often also size and weight matters and our team has to make the instrument fit into spaces where a normal analyzer is too large or heavy. (more…)
