PTR-MS breath test shows potential for detecting liver disease

Researchers at the University of Birmingham have published results that suggest a non-invasive breath test for liver disease using an IONICON PTR-MS. Elevated levels of limonene in patients have been found to be indicative of a diseased liver.

Especially in the UK liver disease has risen sharply over the past few decades and is the third biggest cause of premature mortality. Patients do not often present with symptoms until the disease is advanced. Even then diagnosis is difficult and the symptoms are often general and can be mistaken for other pathologies.

Breath gas analysis is a non-invasive method to collect information on the state of an individual by monitoring the concentration of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in the exhaled breath, which are directly correlate to their concentrations in blood.

The IONICON fastGC is the winner of the Gases & Instrumentation International Magazine’s 2015 Golden Gas Award in the category Gas Chromatography.

From being G&I’s product of the month last December it took our new fastGC only a couple of months to score again.

The Golden Gas Awards are conducted by G&I each year as a tribute to the technology of gases.

Science award for LCU development

For his innovative developments leading to IONICON’s Liquid Calibration Unit (LCU), Lukas Fischer has been awarded with the Science Award of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce.

For IONICON innovation is our most valuable asset that is being cultivated in all our activities. When we initiated the development of the LCU, Lukas Fischer had just started as a Diploma student in the company. “At the beginning it looked like a challenging project but we had no idea how many innovative steps were necessary to make the LCU the product it is today.”, says Jens Herbig, CTO of IONICON. The challenges were a perfect match for Lukas’ innovative approach. The development of the active Liquid Flow Controller is only one example.

PTR-MS for indoor air quality monitoring

A new review article discusses important applications of IONICON PTR-MS systems in indoor air quality monitoring.

Many sources of airborne contamination e.g. VOCs (volatile organic compounds) influence on the quality of indoor air. These substances are emitted by household products, electronics such as computers, printers or TVs,  construction materials, wall-paints, carpets, and furniture.  Many of which are known to affect human health or at least to cause unpleasant odors. They can be present in high concentrations due to insufficient ventilation inside closed spaces such as e.g. buildings, offices etc. but also cars and aircraft cabins. Chemical contamination of indoor air is a contributing factor to the so called “Sick Building Syndrome“.

IONICON PTR-MS is an excellent tool for assessing the concentration of indoor air VOCs, providing real-time quantitative results from very low levels (sub-pptv) to high concentrations (ppmv and above).

A new article by S. Schripp et al. discusses various scenarios, sources of contamination and their impact on the indoor air quality. The team of Fraunhofer WKI, Braunschweig, Germany, and IONICON described five applications of PTR-MS in Indoor Air:

Ionimed’s medical research on coverpage

As a partner in the research framework ONCOTYROL (Center for personalized cancer medicine), Ionimed Analytik has conducted clinical breath gas analysis to investigate new ways for breast cancer screening. This work has now been picked by the Austrian journal GYN-AKTIV as their cover story for issue 6/2012 (in german). In this project Ionimed has employed an Ionicon PTR-TOF 8000 for the analysis of breath samples from more than 200 patients and controls.

Global Medical Discovery features Ionimed’s biotech research

The prestigious Global Medical Discovery website has selected to feature a cutting edge PTR-MS application in biotechnology.

IONICON is conducting research to develop novel solutions for the monitoring of fermentation processes in biotechnology based on PTR-MS. This is done under the auspices of the Austrian center of industrial biotechnology (ACIB), with academic partners (BOKU, Vienna) as well as large biopharmaceutical companies, such as Sandoz and Böhringer Ingelheim.

A break-through in biotech research has been published recently – as we have earlier reported on this blog. Several national Austrian and German media have reported on this story (in German):  not only in the scientific media, such as the blog Medizin-Aspekte, but also the Austrian daily newspaper Der Standard.

Now this publication has attracted more international attention and has been selected by Global Medical Discovery; a website which selects and features breaking news about the latest scientific discoveries in this field.
